Abstract
This study aims to identify the overall correlations between causes and symptoms of hwabyung through meta analysis focusing on individuals, family relationships, social relationships, and socio-cultural factors. First of all, this study examined the overall correlations between causes and symptoms of hwabyung based on Pearson correlation coefficients of selected studies. Second, this study also identified the negative correlations between causes and symptoms of hwabyung as well as their positive correlations. The heterogeneity of effect sizes among selected studies were tested by analyzing the moderating effects of sub-groups based on gender, age, and causes of hwabyung.
Twenty five studies were selected for final meta analysis and 143 correlation coefficients in selected studies were utilized to compute the overall effect size.
Meta-ANOVA was utilized to analyze the moderating effects of sub-groups.
The effect size of negative correlations between causes and symptoms of hwabyung was higher than the medium effect size, indicating that higher self-resilience, psychological flexibility, marital intimacy, marital communication, egalitarian attitude toward gender role and fairness were significantly associated with lower levels of symptoms of hwabyung. The effect size of positive correlations between causes and symptoms of hwabyung was also larger than the medium effect size, indicating that depression, external entrapment, parenting stress, intention to divorce, interpersonal stress, job stress, sexism, and gender role stereotype were significantly associated with stronger symptoms of hwabyung. The moderating effects of sub-groups were partially significant in the correlations among selected studies based on gender and age. No significant moderation was found for the sub-groups of causes of hwabyung.
This study suggests that various factors in hwabyung prevention and intervention should be considered and more research is needed in hwabyung related research.
